Hadith Explanation

Dogs, Blood, Pictures and Tattoos

Narrated Aun bin Abu Juhaifa: I saw my father buying a slave whose profession was cupping, and ordered that his instruments (of cupping) be broken. I asked him the reason for doing so. He replied, “Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) prohibited taking money for blood, the price of a dog, and the earnings of a slave-girl by prostitution; he (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) cursed her who tattoos and her who gets tattooed, the eater of Riba (usury) and also the one who gives it and the maker of pictures.” [The Book of Sales: Sahih Bukhari]

This hadith provides a valuable list of what we must avoid. While everybody would know that the earning through prostitution is forbidden and that interest/Riba is forbidden: but many Muslims, sadly, are unaware that they cannot sell dogs or blood, or make money from the blood of others, or get tattooed or tattoo others, or make pictures of animate life (e.g. humans, animals) or sell such pictures.

Being mindful of Allah’s prohibitions is in our own interest, while disregarding them will be a cause of extreme regret on the Day of Judgement. Sometimes Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) explains the reasons to us and sometimes we are not provided with an explanation for His commands; perhaps because we do not have the capacity to properly understand. Allah knows best. Our reward is in our obedience and the punishment of the Hereafter is not worth the money we could make by these means!
