Hadith Explanation
Jannah in Exchange for Poverty Spent in Obedience
The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Paradise and Hell engaged in an argument. Hell said, ‘I was only given the proud and arrogant.’ Paradise said, ‘Why will only the poor and weak of mankind enter me?’ Allah said to Paradise, ‘You are My mercy, which I will bestow upon whomever I will of my slaves.’ And He said to Hell, ‘You are My wrath, with which I will punish whomever I will of My slaves.’” [Bukhari]
It is only fitting that after a life of destitution and resulting humiliation, that was nevertheless spent in complete obedience and devotion to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), one should be rewarded with Jannah. Unfortunate indeed is the person who was poor and deprived in the world but is also thrown into Hell because of his rebellion against Allah.
Pride and arrogance mislead a person into thinking that they need not bow down before Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). It is befitting such people that they should enter Hell.
