Jar of Pickles

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform the prayer, and pay Zakat. If they say it, they have saved their blood and possessions from me, except for the rights of Islam over them. And their final reckoning is with Allah.” [Sahih Muslim]

The universe belongs to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). He made everything, including us. He continues to provide for us whether we acknowledge Him and His favours or not. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) who made everything in the universe with such purposeful design did not make humans without any purpose. He put us here so that we could testify with our deeds what we are worthy of: Jannat or Jahannum.

Most people live their lives in accordance with what the norm is around them and not in accordance with Allah’s commands. As historically witnessed, most people choose to be Allah’s slaves when the systems of Islam are in place and there is no fear of persecution. Thus, to allow people to live by Islam it becomes necessary to remove those elements that rebel against Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and prevent others from living as Muslims.

If a huge jar of pickles develops a layer of fungus at the top, only the rotten layer is skimmed off. There is no need to throw the whole jar away. However, if the rotten layer is not removed, the fungus will spread and require all the pickles to be thrown away. Why should everybody take a place in the Fire, when most of them can be saved? Jihad removes the rotten crust that stands in between a person and Allah.

“The Khalifa makes war upon non-Muslims, provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax while remaining in their ancestral religions. The significance is of their paying it, not the money itself. This is in accordance with the word of Allah Most High: ‘Fight those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who forbid not what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden – who do not practice the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book – until they pay the poll tax out of hand and are humbled.’ [Quran 9:29]” [Reliance of the Traveller by Ahmad ibn Naqib Al-Misri]

“Jihad is a communal obligation (Fardh Kifayah) on the Muslims each year. This means that when enough people perform it to successfully accomplish it, it is no longer obligatory upon others. If none of those concerned perform Jihad, then everyone is guilty of sin. This is the case when Muslims are safe in their own lands. When non-Muslims invade a Muslim country, Jihad becomes personally obligatory (Fardh Ayn) on each Muslim.” [Reliance of the Traveller by Ahmad ibn Naqib Al-Misri]
