Hadith Explanation

Jinn in the Séance Room

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) stated: “The souls of the martyrs are in the crops of green birds which have lamps hanging from the Throne. They wander about in Jannah wherever they wish, then they come back to those lamps.” [Saheeh Muslim]

This hadith tells us where the martyrs (Shuhada) are. They are enjoying themselves in Jannah. Whenever anybody dies, whether pious or evil, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) takes their soul and keeps it. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says in the Quran: “It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed.” [Surah Zumar: Ayat 42]

Allah has appointed angels who torment those souls that were evil and bless those that were righteous and pious. The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) has explained to us how the Angel of Death seizes souls and what he does with them after that.

So what is the Islamic view on summoning the spirits of the dead? Is it possible? Pondering the meaning of the texts on this matter leads one to conclude that this is definitely impossible. Because souls are kept with their Lord, He has appointed strong and skilled guardians over them. So they cannot escape or run away from them to come to those people who play with people’s minds. Some spiritualists claim that they are summoning the souls of one of the righteous slaves of Allah, such as the Prophets or martyrs. But Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has told us that they are alive with their Lord. They do not leave the Gardens of eternal bliss to come to a darkened séance room.

Those who are thought to be spirits are either devils at large from among the jinn, or the person’s own devil companion, Qareen. Since the Qareen constantly accompanies a person he knows a lot about his characteristics, habits, attributes, relatives and friends.

Those who call themselves spiritualists and claim to be able to summon spirits and heal the sick by means of them, or find lost objects, or tell the future, or serve people, are liars. These spirits are no more than devils, and working with devils jeopardizes one’s life in this world and surely the next.
