Hadith Explanation

Kisra's Successor

When Kisra was destroyed the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) asked: “Who did they have to succeed him?” They said: “His daughter.” So the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “A people will never succeed who give their leadership to a woman.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi]

What we learn from this hadith is that it is not permissible in Islam to choose a woman as a ruler. To do so would be a wasteful bargain leading to loss. It symbolizes the nation having drifted away from the natural inclinations on which Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has created it. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has assigned certain roles to men and certain roles to women, and given each of them the strengths necessary to fulfill their responsibilities. To deviate from these roles and responsibilities spells disaster.

All the wheels of a car are equally necessary to the proper functioning of a car. The car won’t be able to move forward with any one of the wheels idle. They must all work at the same time. But each works in its own place. The same is the case with a motor bike. One of its wheels must be the front wheel and the other the back wheel. It would be silly for the wheels to start complaining about their positions. Each is equally important!

In any factory we find goods being produced with division of labour. No one person makes the entire product from start to finish, because that would be very inefficient. Different people specialize to efficiently produce different parts of the product. The family also has a product – children and people worthy of Jannah. To produce this product the same logic of role specialization applies. Where this approach has been abandoned, the failed product is also available for all to see.
