Last to Emerge from the Fire

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “I know the last of the people of Paradise to enter Paradise, and the last of the people of Hell to emerge from the Fire. It will be a man who will be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said, ‘Show him the least of his sins.’ It will be said to him, ‘Did you not do such and such on such a day…?’ He will say, ‘Yes.’ He will not be able to deny it, and he will be scared that his major sins will also be shown to him. Then it will be said to him, ‘In the place of every Sayi’ah you have a Hasanah.’ He will say, ‘My Lord, I did things that I do not see here.’” Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) said that on narrating this he saw the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) smiling so broadly that his eyeteeth could be seen. [Saheeh Muslim]

Once the sinful people, whom Allah wishes to allow into Paradise, have been cleansed of the evil of their deeds through their suffering in Hell, they will be taken out of it.

The mercy and bounty of Allah towards His slaves will reach such an extent that He will exchange their Sayi’aat for Hasanaat. Their evil deeds will be exchanged for good deeds so that they can enjoy blessings for good deeds that they did not even do.

The last man to be brought out of the Fire will be shown some of his lesser sins, which he will admit to hoping that his major sins are not brought up. But when he sees that his sins are getting converted into rewards he will ask Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) about his major sins that were kept concealed!

Here he was a minute ago, wishing his sins to be kept hidden; and here he is now, his shame, trepidation and guilt gone, asking to be rewarded for them! This audacity made the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) smile.
