Hadith Explanation

Like Resting in the Shade of a Tree

It was narrated that Abdullah said: “The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) lay down on a reed mat, and it left marks on his skin. I said, ‘May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! If you had told us we would have provided you with something that would save you this trouble.’ The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, ‘What is there between myself and the world? This world and I are just like a rider who stops to rest beneath the shade of a tree then goes and leaves it.’” [Sunan Ibn Majah]

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) didn’t bother to get a decent mattress for himself but instead slept on a reed mat that left its impressions all over his back. Though the adored leader of the Muslims, who were ever ready to sacrifice their lives for him, he never asked them for any material comforts. That is because he saw the world as too insignificant to care for its favours. He likened his life on earth to the short time that a man on a journey rests under the shade of a tree. He doesn’t bother with his furnishings or much else for that duration.

Our future, never-ending life, compared to our life in this world, is like an ocean compared to a drop. Avoiding comfortable things and utilities with the intention of spending the money to earn Allah’s Pleasure instead is praiseworthy. Instead of investing everything in the life of this world, we should try to send as much as possible to decorate our homes of the Hereafter, where we have to spend a lot more time compared to the time that we will spend here.
