Hadith Explanation

Loving to Meet Allah

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him. Whoever is averse to meeting Allah, Allah is averse to meeting him.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi]

The dislike of death is natural and not what is being discussed in this hadith. When a person is about to die they are shown glimpses of their approaching destiny, whether it be the Garden or the Fire. It is the feeling that a person has at this time that is mentioned in this hadith.

He/she who is shown their place in Jannah, sees a world and a continuation of life better than the one they are leaving behind and so they are eager to meet Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) after death.

On the other hand, he/she who sees the punishment of Jahannum awaiting them, in return for the careless and insensitive life they have lived, hate the thought of dieing and wish to run away from their Lord and the reckoning they were promised. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) also has no desire to meet such souls.

As we love to meet people who love us and we dislike to meet people who don’t care about us, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) also looks forward to meeting his obedient slaves and dislikes meeting heedless creatures.
