Lying Down on One’s Belly

Ya’ish bin Tikhfah al-Ghifari reported that his father (radi Allahu anhuma) said: “I was lying down on my belly in the masjid when someone shook me with his foot and said, ‘Lying down this way is hated by Allah.’ I looked up and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam).” [Abu Dawud]

To lie down or sleep in a prone position is extremely repugnant to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and so He has forbidden us from it through the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam).

Since Allah’s love for each of us is more than the love of seventy mothers combined, lieing down or sleeping in a prone position must be harmful for us in ways we cannot suspect. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) would never forbid us something that is more beneficial for us than harmful.

He, Who has made Jannah for us, out of His Own Will, would not deny us petty things, unless those petty things were hindrances in our path to much greater benefits.
