Hadith Explanation

Peeking

“Sahal bin Sa’ad (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that once the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was in his house combing his hair when someone came and peeked through the hole in the door. When the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) opened the door and noticed him peeking, he told him, ‘If I had known before that you were peeking, I would have struck your eye with the spear.’” [Bukhari]

The requirement to ask for permission before entering someone’s home is meant to prevent people from freely looking in.

You do not have the right to look at other people’s property without their permission. A closed door, a curtain, a closet, a drawer, a closed bag, a letter, etc, are all closed for a purpose – for you to seek permission before you open them. So control your eyes from looking at what is not lawful for it.

Consider how severe the Prophet’s reaction was when he (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) caught someone peeking into his house.
