Plastering Graves

Jabir (radi Allahu anhu) said: “I heard the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) forbid sitting on graves and plastering or building structures over them.” [Sunan Abu Dawud]

Putting an inscription on the grave containing the deceased person’s name and lineage, or words of praise for him, or writing the names of Allah or His Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), or Ayaat from the Quran, all this is prohibited in Islam. Construction over graves, as in tombs, is also clearly forbidden in Islam as evident from this hadith. However, it is permissible to put up some sort of a marker, like what the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) did when he put a rock on the grave of Uthman bin Mazun (radi Allahu anhu).
