Policy towards the Companions

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When my Companions are mentioned then withhold.” [At-Tabaraanee]

The best of this Ummah after the passing away of its Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) is Abu Bakr then Umar then Uthman (radi Allahu anhum). This is what is reported to us from Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) who said: “We used to say whilst Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was amongst us, ‘The best of people after the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) is Abu Bakr then Umar then Uthman.’ The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would hear of that and not criticize it.” [Bukhari]

“Then the best of people after them are Ali, Talhah, az-Zubayr, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, Saeed ibn Zayd, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf and Abu Ubaidah Aamir ibn al-Jarrah (radi Allahu anhum). All of them were suitable to be Khaleefa.

“Then the best of people after them are the rest of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), the first generation amongst whom he was sent, the first Muhaajirs and Ansaar, and those who prayed towards both qiblahs. Then the best of people after them are those who accompanied the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) for a day, a month, a year, or less or more than that.

“We ask Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) to have mercy upon them all. We mention their virtues and remain silent about any mistakes they made and we do not speak about a single one of them except favourably, as the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘When my Companions are mentioned then withhold.’” [“Explanation of the Creed” by Imam Al-Barbahaaree]

Sufyaan ibn Uyainah (one of the leading scholars of the Taabi’ut-Taabieen) said, “He who speaks a single word against the Companions of Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) is an innovator.” [“Explanation of the Creed” by Imam Al-Barbahaaree]
