Seat Grabber

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “If someone leaves his seat (for one reason or another) and returns to it, he is more entitled to it.” [Muslim]

The beauty of Islam is that it addresses issues big and small. Even everyday matters such as how to conduct oneself in a gathering are detailed for Muslims so that they may behave in a way that is pleasing to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and secure Allah’s reward for themselves through it.

It is due to unfamiliarity with Islamic manners that a person grabs another’s seat if he/she has to get up for some reason. To make matters worse, the seat grabber might make a catty comment like, “This place didn’t have your name written on it!” if they are asked to get up.

Don’t be a seat grabber. Behave in a way that is pleasing to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). If you do take someone’s seat while they’re gone be sure to vacate it for them as soon as you see them return.
