Hadith Explanation

Seek Everyone's Permission

Once a man asked the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), “O Messenger of Allah! Do I need to take permission even from my mother before entering her house?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied, “Yes.” The man asked, “O Messenger of Allah! I live alone with her in the house.” Even then he (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied, “Ask for her permission.” The man said, “But, I serve her.” The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied, “Ask your mother for permission before entering the house. Do you wish to see her in the nude?” The man replied, “No.” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Then ask for her permission.”  [Muwatta Imam Malik]

People live casually in their homes. Especially if a person is bathing or changing, they might be in a state of undress. Don’t take them (and yourself) by surprise, even if they are your family; rather, announce yourself and ask for their permission before entering.

Islamic etiquette, as evidenced in the exchange of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) with this man, is that one not refer to unpleasantness unnecessarily. The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) told the man repeatedly to seek his mother’s permission: Only when the man kept insisting that there appeared to be no need to do so, did the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) specifically state what the consequences could be if he were to simply barge into the house.
