Hadith Explanation

Seven Hundred Camels in Exchange for One

“A man brought a haltered camel and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this is for the sake of Allah.’ The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘For this you will have seven hundred camels on the Day of Resurrection.’” [Muslim]

Imaam Ibn Katheer quoted this Hadith in his Tafseer of the Ayat, “The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the path of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He wills.” [Surah Baqarah, Ayat 261]

Not all types of charity are equally rewarded. The most highly rewarded is spending “fee Sabeel Allah” (in the path of Allah). But what does “in the path of Allah” mean?

“Saeed ibn Jubayr said: ‘This means, in obedience to Allah.’ Makhool said: ‘This means spending in Jihad, buying steeds of war and preparing weapons, etc.’ It was narrated from Ibn Abbaas that Jihad and Hajj multiply the Dirhams spent on them by seven hundred.” [Tafseer Ibn Katheer]
