Hadith Explanation

Shield Against Jahannum

Aisha (radi Allahu anha) narrated: “One day a woman accompanied by two small girls came to visit me and begged me to give her something. I had only one date which I handed over to her. The woman divided the date into two halves and gave one half to each girl, leaving nothing for herself to eat. Afterwards she stood up and went out. The same moment, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) entered the house. I related the whole matter to him. On hearing the case the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘Any man who is put to trial on account of daughters being born to him and he comes out of the trial successful by virtue of showing good treatment to his daughters, shall have these girls serve him as a shield against the fire of Hell on the Day of Judgement.” [Mishkat]

It is one thing to go hungry oneself, another to see one’s small children hungry. Those who show patience at this difficult time and treat their children as best they can, like the woman in this hadith did, shall be compensated by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) in such a manner that they are secured against the worst calamity that could befall any human being (i.e. Jahannum).
