Hadith Explanation

Silk for Men

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Zurair, meaning Al-Ghafiqi, that he heard Ali bin Abi Talib (radi Allahu anhu) say: "The Prophet of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) took a piece of silk in his right hand, and a piece of gold in his left, then he said: 'These two are unlawful for the males of my Ummah.'" [Abu Dawud - graded sahih]

Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) in His wisdom has forbidden silk and gold for men. Perhaps this is in order to keep them away from such elements that incline them towards a life of luxury and ease. The burden of protecting the lives and land of the Muslims is on their shoulders, for which the reward is more than sufficient. However, men then have to have lifestyles that do not hold them back from discharging their responsibilities.
