Silk in One Place Only

Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “None wears silk in this world, but he who will have no share in the Hereafter.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Men are forbidden from wearing silk. They can choose to either wear silk here or go to Jannah and wear it there. This prohibition does not apply to women and they wore silk in the time of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam).

Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would get angry when he saw Muslim men wearing silk. Ali bin Abi Talib (radi Allahu anhu) said: “The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) gave me a silk suit. I went out wearing it, but seeing the signs of anger on his face I tore it and distributed it among my wives.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Once Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) gave Umar (radi Allahu anhu) a silk suit. Umar (radi Allahu anhu) asked what he should do with it since it was forbidden for men to wear silk. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) answered: “I sent it to you so that you either sell it or give it to somebody else to wear.” [Sahih Bukhari]
