Speeding up Burial

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Hurry up with the dead body (for its burial), for if it is pious you are speeding it to goodness and if it is otherwise, you will be free from an evil placed on your shoulders.” [Sahih Muslim]

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) taught us to bury the deceased immediately. Sometimes when family members, e.g. children of the deceased, are in different countries the burial is delayed till their arrival, so that they can pay their last visit. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) told us not to delay washing, shrouding or burying the deceased. The last visit might be done after burial, when the deceased is in his or her grave. In any case one should not intend to make one’s visit to deceased parents their last, as every Muslim is asked to visit the graves of his or her parents and make dua for them whenever he or she is able to.

If a person is meant to go to Jannah then the earlier their burial happens the quicker they begin to enjoy the pleasures of Jannah since their grave is made spacious, the doors of Jannah are opened for them and they begin to get the fragrance of Jannah. In case the deceased is destined to be punished, then the burial of this sinner is an evil burden lying on your shoulders. So in either case, the deceased should be buried as soon as possible.

The only case in which burial might be delayed is when there is a legal issue related to death, e.g., if there is some sort of investigation to be done or the identity of the deceased needs to be established.
