Strand of Hair Approach

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The best of affairs is that which is far from both extremes.” [Al-Bayhaqi]

Muawiyah was once asked, “How did you manage to be a governor for twenty years and then a Caliph for twenty years?” He replied, “I placed a strand of hair between myself and the people. I would hold it from one end and they would hold it from the other. If they pulled it from their end, I would loosen it from mine so that the strand of hair would not break. If they loosened it from their end, I would pull on it from mine.”

If both partners in a couple are stubborn, then they cannot live together in happiness. Similarly, two stubborn people can never be friends for long.

A fire is not put out by fire, it will only increase the flames. Similarly, coldness cannot be removed with coldness. So, don’t deal with a stubborn person by using stubbornness, it will only result in fireworks. Remember Muawiyah’s “strand of hair” approach to deal effectively with people. Keep your behaviour moderate and flexible while, at all times, within the bounds of Shariah.
