Sweet Smelling Flowers

Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) narrated: “I heard the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) say, ‘They (Hasan and Husain) are my two sweet smelling flowers in this world.’” [Sahih Bukhari]

A man once asked Abdullah ibn Umar about the blood of mosquitoes. In other words, if there was any recompense one should make for killing mosquitoes. Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) responded with a question. “From where are you?” The man replied that he was from Iraq. Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) responded, “Look at that! He is asking me about the blood of mosquitoes while they (the Iraqis) have killed the (grand) son of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). I heard the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) say, ‘They (Hasan and Husain) are my two sweet smelling flowers in this world.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) loved his grandchildren very much. Abdullah ibn Umar pointed to the superficiality of the Islam prevalent at his time with his question. In other words, he was saying that you ask about things which are insignificant while ignoring the monstrosities you commit! Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said regarding all children that they are the flowers of Jannah. What would Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) have to say to us today were he to see our collaboration in the wasting of these flowers of Jannah from Rasul Allah’s Ummah?
