Tahajjud’s Eleven

Aisha (radi Allahu anha) said: “Between the Isha prayer and the Fajr prayer, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) used to pray eleven Rakat. He used to give the Tasleem after every two Rakat and then pray one Witr Raka.” [Bukhari; Kitab al-Witr]

Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says: “Surely your Lord knows that you stand (in prayer) two thirds of the night, or a half of it, or a third of it.” [73:20]

We can work out the length of each Raka of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) by dividing two thirds, a half, or a third of the night by eleven!

His burden was heavy, and his task monumental, in establishing the awareness of Allah and the Hereafter in the hearts of people and in establishing Islam in society. This prayer was food for his soul and strengthening of his Eeman. Therefore, praying Tahajjud was obligatory for him (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam).

But we also have tasks to perform on earth to gain admittance to Jannah and we also need our Eeman to be strengthened, so we should also pray as much as we can of the Tahajjud prayer.
