Hadith Explanation

The Judgement of Umar

It was narrated that Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) say, 'Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) has placed the truth on the tongue of Umar, and he speaks with that (truth).'" [Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah - Sahih]

There were several instances in the life of Umar (radi Allahu anhu) where he said something out of his own judicious opinion, and Allah's ordainment came in accord with that judgement. Cases in point are: the commandment regarding Hijab; the question of the prisoners of the Battle of Badr; taking the "Station of Ibraheem" as a place of prayer; and the decision concerning the funeral prayer of the chief of the hypocrites, Abdullah ibn Ubayy. This attribute of forming correct opinions was certainly a special gift or favour granted to Umar (radi Allahu anhu) by Allah (subhana wa ta'ala).
