The Man who Broke his Fast

A man came to the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and said, “I am ruined!” The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) asked, “What is the matter?” He said, “I had sexual relations with my wife (while fasting) in Ramadhan.” The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said to him, “Can you afford to manumit a slave?” He said, “No.” The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Can you observe Saum (fasting) for two successive months?” He said, “No.” The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?” He replied in the negative. Later on, an Araq (big basket) containing dates was presented to the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), and the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said (to him), “Take this basket and give it in charity.” The man said, “To poorer people than we, O Allah’s Messenger? By Him who has sent you with the Truth! Indeed, there is no house in between the two mountains (of the city of Al-Madina) poorer than us.” So the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Go and feed it to your family.” [Sahih Bukhari]

This hadith teaches us that should a Muslim break their fast of Ramadhan by intercourse then the expiation of that is either: 1) to free a slave, 2) fast consecutively for two whole months, or 3) feed sixty poor people.

This hadith also shows us the loving and caring nature of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). This man was able to do none of these so the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) helped him by donating the basket of dates to him in order to enable him to discharge his obligation towards Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). He did not have the “Its not my problem” kind of attitude many Muslims have these days.

When you read about this incident don’t your lips curl into a smile? First this man commits a sin and then ends up being the beneficiary of the food of sixty people by it! The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) also had a sense of humour. When the man said that he was most deserving of the dates “the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) smiled till his premolar teeth became visible.” [Sahih Bukhari]
