The Number of Angels

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “There is no space in the seven heavens a foot’s length or a hand span or a palm’s width which does not have an angel standing, bowing, or prostrating on it.” [Tabarani]

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said that the heavens groan with the weight of the angels and they have a right to groan, so many are the angels that they must hold.

There are untold myriads of angels who have been created. No one knows their exact number except for Him who created them. To get an idea consider this hadith: “On the Day of Judgement, Jahannum will be drawn up by 70,000 thongs, and holding each thong there will be 70,000 angels.”

According to this hadith, the angels who bring Jahannum on the Day of Rising, alone will number 4,900,000,000. In addition, there are angels in charge of the mountains. There are angels in charge of rain drops. There are multiple angels taking care of each member of humankind. There is the angel in charge of sperm drops, two angels to record, guardian angels, and two angels accompanying each human being to guide and direct him. Subhan-Allah!
