The Size and Beauty of Angels

“The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) saw Jibreel dressed in a green robe and he completely filled all the space between heaven and earth.” [Muslim]

In another hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “I have been granted permission to speak of an angel, one of the bearers of the Throne. His feet are in the lowest earth and the Throne is resting on his horn. The distance from his earlobe to his shoulder is like that of a bird flying for seven hundred years. That angel says, ‘Glory be to You, wherever You are.’” [Tabarani in Al-Mujam al-Awsat]

The angels are immense in size, far and away bigger than any of the creatures we normally see. The angels vary in size, not being all the same, some of them having two wings, some three, and some four [Quran 35:1], up to Jibreel who has six hundred wings. [Sahih Bukhari]

Moreover, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) created the angels with a noble and beautiful form. He (subhana wa ta’ala) says in respect of Jibreel (alaihis salam), “Taught him by one terrible in power, very strong (dhu marra), he stood poised.” [Quran 53:5-6] Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) said that “dhu marra” in this ayat means “having a beautiful appearance.”

It is commonly established knowledge that the angels are beautiful in form, just as it is also commonly established that the satans are ugly. That is why people say that a beautiful human being looks like an angel. Consider what the women said about Yusuf (alaihis salam), as related in the Quran [12:31], “When they saw him, they were amazed by him and cut their hands. They said, ‘Allah preserve! This is no man. This is but a noble angel standing here!’” [The World of the Noble Angels by Umar S. al-Ashqar]
