Hadith Explanation
The Tinkling of Bells
Banaanah (radi Allahu anha) reported: “I was with Aisha (radi Allahu anha) when a woman with a young girl came to visit her. That girl was wearing a tinkling anklet. So Aisha (radi Allahu anha) said, ‘Do not bring the girl inside the house until she removes the anklet. I heard the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) say that angels do not enter the house where bells ring.’” [Abu Dawud]
If we would like the angels of mercy, bringing Allah’s special blessings, to enter our houses, we should take care to ensure that there are no objects that make tinkling or jingling sounds like the sounds of bells. Wind chimes, ornaments and jewelry that make noise should be put away.
