Tongues of Fire

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever is two-faced in this world, will have a tongue of fire on the Day of Resurrection.” [Abu Dawud]

The most evil of people on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who is fickle, who is not consistent in his attitude, but presents one face to some people and another face to others.

The problem with us is that as soon as we read ahadith such as these we immediately begin to look around us to see who fits this description. We don’t look at ourselves, and if we do try to look at ourselves a voice from within us says, “You’re wonderful! There’s nothing wrong with you.”

We need to look carefully at ourselves and examine our behaviour:

Do we say one thing in one gathering and its opposite in a different gathering?
Do we support one person or group in one sitting but speak against them in another sitting?
Are we friendly with some people, but as soon as they leave, we begin to backbite them?

If so, we may well end up with tongues of fire.
