Hadith Explanation

Undressing for Charity Objectionable

“A man in a poor condition entered the Masjid of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). At that time the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was commanding the people to give charity. When the people had collected the donations, he (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) gave two items of clothing to the man in poor condition.

“When for the second time the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) advised the people to give in charity, that seedy looking man threw one item of clothing. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said in anger, ‘See this shabby looking man, I had given him two pieces of clothing, and when I again advised people to give in charity, he threw one piece of his.’ The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) reproached him considerably.” [Abu Dawud]

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) wanted to remove want and obscenity from society. Thus, the man was given two pieces of cloth by the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) so that he may move about in a respectable condition. He should not have given away that minimum he had been given to dress decently.

We are to keep with us as much wealth as may allow us to raise our head with dignity in society. Thus, what the man did, to give away the only clothes he had, was reprehensible.
