Unlawful Food makes My Limbs Disobedient

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The stomach is the fountain of the body and the veins come out of it. When the stomach is sound, the veins come out with health, and when it is unsound, they come out with disease.” [Ihya Ulum Id-Din by Imam Ghazali]

Sahal Tastari explained: “The limbs of a man become disobedient who eats unlawful food willingly or unwillingly, knowingly or unknowingly. The limbs of a man who eats lawful food become obedient to him and help him in doing good deeds.” [Ihya Ulum Id-Din]

What things are unlawful, which when they reach our stomach incite our limbs to rebel against Allah (subhana wa ta’ala)?

They are:
(1) things which are naturally unlawful, and
(2) earnings which are unlawful.

(1) The things which are naturally unlawful are alcohol, blood, the meat of pigs, dead animals, etc.

(2) Unlawful earnings are those which the Islamic Shariah has not allowed us to consume. These unlawful earnings may come to us by our own efforts such as by selling musical instruments, alcohol, lottery tickets or dogs, or by taking Riba (interest), etc.

Alternatively, these unlawful earnings may come to us as gifts, inheritance, etc. Once, a servant of a pious man was given some fuel that belonged to a transgressor. The pious man extinguished it, and didn’t allow himself to cook with it or benefit from it in any way, assuming that it had been unlawfully earned by the transgressor.

If we want to save our limbs from the Fire of Hell, and keep them obedient to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), then we should allow only lawful food into our stomachs.
