Hadith Explanation

Unnecessarily High

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “He who makes his house high without necessity, will be asked to bear its burden.” [Ihya Ulum Id-Deen]

Wasteful spending will be a cause of grief and a physical burden to carry on the Day of Judgement. That is why the early Muslims built very simple houses that were barely sufficient for their needs, and from which they would eagerly depart with the Angel of Death.

Hasan Basri said: “When we entered the hut of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), we could touch its roof.”

Amr bin Dinar said: “When a man makes his roof higher than six cubits, an angel proclaims: ‘O sinner, where are you going?’”

Sufyan Thauri prohibited looking at lofty buildings. He said that if people didn’t bother to look and admire them others wouldn’t waste their resources constructing them.
