Hadith Explanation

Urinating Here Reproachable

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Keep away from three reproachable acts: Do not urinate on river-banks, on the higher portion of the road, and in a shadowy place.” [Abu Dawud]

Urinating on river banks would risk the urine going into the river, which people use water from for all sorts of purposes.

Urinating on the higher portion of a road might cause it to come down to the lower portion of the road as well.

Especially in the warmer parts of the world, shade is very valuable as a place in which to take a break from the scorching heat of the sun. Therefore, urinating in a shaded place (such as under a shade tree) would result in that resting place being ruined.

Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) is concerned about our well being in this world and the next. Therefore, He has forbidden people from urinating in places where this would harm others.
