Hadith Explanation

Vomiting During One’s Fast

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Someone fasting who unintentionally vomits is not obliged to make up his fast, but whoever causes himself to vomit must make it up.” [Ibn Majah]

In the same way that unintentional eating or drinking does not break one’s fast, unintentional vomiting does not break it either. It is intentional eating, drinking or vomiting that breaks it. Doing any of these intentionally, without excuse, while fasting, is sinful and the words of this hadith indicate that the fast must be made up.

This hadith also proves that an act of worship missed without excuse is obligatory to make up afterwards.
