Waking Up

“When the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) woke up from his sleep, he would say: ‘Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhee ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilaihin-nushoor’ (All praises and thanks are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die and unto Him is the Resurrection.)” [Sahih Bukhari]

At any time during an exam can you afford to forget that you are supposed to be writing your exam paper? All of life is one big exam, the results are to be announced and handed out on the Day of Resurrection. We cannot afford to forget at any time during life what we are here to do – to try to earn Jannah. Nor can we afford to forget that we will have to face a final accountability. This Dua for waking up in the morning is to set our priorities straight for the day ahead of us, and to remind us of the main item on our agenda – to be a Muslim.

Waking up is one of the many occasions for which the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) taught us specific words, with which to remember our Meeting with Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
