What to Say When Passing Graves

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) went out to the graveyard and said: “As-salaamu alaikum daara qawmin mumineena wa inna insha-Allah bikum laahiqoon.” [Sunan Abu Dawud]

The meaning of this dua is: “Peace be upon you, abode of believing people, and we shall join you if Allah wills.”

Thus, when passing by a graveyard of Muslims one should greet them. The statement, “we shall join you if Allah wills,” refers not to simple death since every human will surely die, but it refers to death in the condition of Eeman, i.e. dying as a believer. We pray to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) that our death comes to us while we are Mumineen.
