Hadith Explanation

When Life Underground Is Preferable

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When your rulers are righteous, and the rich among you are generous and large-hearted, and when your collective affairs are decided by mutual consultation, then life on the surface of the earth is far better for you than death. But when your governors and rulers are persons of wicked character, and the rich in your society are lovers of wealth and are stingy and misers, and when the course of your affairs is determined by your wives, then death i.e. to be buried under the surface of the earth, is far better for you than life on the surface of the earth.” [Tirmidhi]

This hadith describes three conditions that make life not worth living. These are: (1) to have rulers of bad character, (2) to have the wealthy people of society be materialistic and unwilling to share their wealth, and (3) to have controlling women decide one’s affairs. When all these conditions exist then a person is better off being dead because he is more likely to sin than do good deeds.

This hadith does not justify suicide; regardless of the circumstances of life we have to try to remain steadfast on Islam and hope for Allah’s compensation in place of the difficulties we might have to undergo. This hadith simply describes a state of affairs displeasing to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).

We should try our best not to become one of those who make life on earth unbearable for others.

As for life in the grave being preferable: Indeed, the grave is a beautiful and happy place for the righteous slaves of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
