Your Friend's Religion Is Yours

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “A man is upon the religion of his friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi]

We are very heavily influenced by the company we keep. Slowly and imperceptibly to ourselves, though perhaps others might notice, we adopt the thinking, habits, beliefs, mannerisms and lifestyle of our friends. It is thus very important that we choose those people as friends who we won’t be embarrassed to be with on the Day of Judgement.

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said that even animals influence the personality of the people who keep company with them. He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said that he who spends much time around camels learns to harbour grudges, while he who keeps the company of horses becomes arrogant. If animals can influence us so much, how much more can those who are of the same species?
