Actions are Judged by Intentions
The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said,
“Deeds are judged by the intentions behind them, and a person will be rewarded according to his intention. So whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, his emigration will be for Allah and His Messenger; and whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration will be what he emigrated for.” [Bukhari]
The background for this Hadith is that a person sent a proposal of marriage to a woman named Umm Qais, which she turned down saying that he needed to emigrate to Al-Madinah if he wanted to marry her. He did so and the two were married there. On account of this event, the man came to be known among the Sahabah as “Muhajir Umm Qais”.
The real basis of one's actions is the intention (Niyyah) and everyone will be requited according to his intention. Niyyah is found in one's heart.
Sincerity (Ikhlaas) is a must for every action. In other words, in every righteous deed, one should seek only the Pleasure of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala); otherwise, it will not be accepted by Him. [Riyaadh us –Saaliheen]
