Sightseeing Destroyed Nations
Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Do not enter (the places) of these people where Allah's punishment has fallen unless you do so weeping. If you do not weep, do not enter (the places of these people) because Allah's curse and punishment which fell upon them may fall upon you.” [Bukhari]
Once on an expedition the Prophet’s army was camped near the ruins of a nation that had been destroyed by Allah’s punishment. Some Muslims got water from wells of the ruins. When the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wasallam) found out about it he ordered them to throw the water out, and to feed the dough that they had made with the water to the animals.
On another occasion Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) ordered the Muslims to hurriedly pass through an area since it was one that had been visited by Allah’s punishment. Does it make sense then for Muslims to go sightseeing the ruins of destroyed nations? If we go there what should our reaction be? If we are not weeping from the fear of Allah’s punishment but glorifying the destroyed civilization we are only inviting Allah’s punishment on ourselves.
